To be able to prepare for traveling to Macau, here are some basic information I have gathered about the place which I believe will helpyou in planning well your trip to Macau and thereby maximize the time and money you will spend for it should you decide to go.
Geography
Macau consists of Macau peninsula and the islands of Taipa and Coloane and is located southwest of Hong Kong and east of Guangzhou. Taipa and Coloane are connected by the Cotai Strip formed through landfill. Macau borders Zhuhai in mainland China.

Climate
The climate in Macau is humid subtropical with average annual temperature of 22.7 ◦C. The warmest is in July with average temperature of 28.9 ◦C and the coolest is in January with average temperature of 15 ◦C.
Macau has four seasons. Autumn which is sunny and warm with low humidity is from October to November. Winter which is mostly mild and sunny is in December to early March. Spring is in late March to June where humidity gets high. Summer which is generally warm to hot (above 30 ◦C) is from July to September. However, heavy rain, thunderstorm, and occasional typhoons often follow the hot weather.
Want to know the best time to visit Macau? I’ve read it once that the best would be October, but I guess it should depend on your preference.

Language
Cantonese and Portuguese are the official languages, but Mandarin, Hokkien, and English are also spoken by some local communities. Macanese is also still spoken by several dozen Macanese.

Of course, for most non-Chinese and non-Portuguese travelers, the main concern would be English communication. In every hotel, restaurant, or market stall, there is more possibility that some staff can speak English although some travelers have complained that in the hotels where they stayed there was none.
Travel tip: If you worry about ease of communication, ask someone you know who can speak Cantonese, Portuguese, or Mandarin to write some translations for some basic sentences you might need while traveling. This will help you enough, I guess.
Currency
Currency used is pataca. It is almost the same as Hong Kong dollar with the rate of HK$ 1 = MOP 1.03. With the Hong Kong dollar almost equivalent to pataca, the Hong Kong dollar is accepted as currency for payment in many establishments. Make allowance for some losses in exchanging currency.
As of March 28, 2011, the following are the estimated conversions:
MOP 1.00 = PHP 5.41097; USD 0.124502
USD 1.00 = MOP 8.03179

Hope this initial information on Macau will be useful enough to you.
